ARE THERE ANY AGE RESTRICTIONS?
No. You can apply for the Disability Tax Credit at any age even if you are a child or over age 65.
CAN I WORK AND RECEIVE THE DISABILITY TAX CREDIT?
Yes you can, there are no restrictions regarding income. In fact, the Canada Revenue Agency specifically states that the ability or inability to work is not included in the eligibility criteria for this tax credit.
HOW MUCH CAN I GET FOR THE DISABILITY TAX CREDIT?
The amount of the disability tax refund will vary depending on such factors as:
The number of years you are eligible to claim the tax credit.
The amount of income tax you have paid.
If you are an adult or a child.
The amount for each year of eligibility ranges between $0 – $2,400
CAN SOMEONE ELSE CLAIM THE TAX CREDIT FOR ME?
Yes, if that person is over the age of 18 who has lived with you or assisted you financially towards food, shelter or clothing and is also one of the following:
Your spouse or common-law partner.
Your or your spouse’s/common law partner’s parent or grandparent.
Your or your spouse’s child, grandchild, brother/sister, uncle/aunt, niece/nephew.
WHAT IS THE CHILD DISABILITY BENEFIT?
The Child Disability Benefit is attached to the Canada Child Benefit when the child with a disability is approved for the Disability Tax Credit.
WILL APPLYING FOR THIS TAX CREDIT IMPACT MY JOB OR PREVENT ME FROM GETTING A DRIVERS LICENSE?
The information provided on the Disability Tax Credit application form is protected under PHIPA and cannot be shared with anyone. Your current or prospective employer will have no way of knowing that you are eligible for the DTC.
